The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the family owners has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is developed, including a substantial range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
