Pacific Bluefin Tuna Sells for Record Sum of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.
The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates locations across the country and internationally.
"The first tuna heralds fortune," remarked the company president, a familiar bidder at the annual new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for submitting high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," stating, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated rapidly."
This new purchase exceeds his own historic purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to surpass his own record another time.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a popular event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi chains shortly after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one satisfied diner.
