Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and another man who ran away subsequent to the blast was found not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area displayed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the property was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
